The Children's House!
Year-around Montessori Program

The Montessori Children's House is for children 2 1/2 years (and potty trained) through Kindergarten.  It is based on the philosophy of Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator who recognized that children's best learning takes place through their senses and their physical activity within their environment.  She saw education as "an aid to life" -- not just the learning of academic material.

Montessori trained teachers, utilizing the Montessori method and scientifically designed materials, create an environment in which children are given the freedom to explore, discover, learn and grow, according to their own interests and needs.

Dr. Montessori spoke of "education for peace," stating that in order to have a peaceful world, we must start with our children.

Children are treated with respect and kindness, which leads them to demonstrate these qualities towards others and the world.  We study other people, places and cultures while honoring their similarities and differences.  We practice reverence for nature while appreciating the interconnectedness of all life.

A Montessori teacher’s job is to guide the children within this environment in a manner in which they can learn and discover for themselves. The teachers are therefore often referred to as Guides.

The Children's House Program

Your child will be guided in choosing Montessori activities from the following areas:

Practical Life

Practical life is the foundation of the Montessori classroom, and consists of "real-life" activities through which children learn to care for themselves, others and their world. Familiar tasks and everyday skills such as pouring, polishing, washing a table, or sewing on a button lead to independence, concentration, a strong sense of order and coordination of movement.  Learning positive ways to handle social situations and extend courtesy to others creates a strong social community.  All of these skills prepare your child for further work in the classroom.

Sensorial

Activities using specially designed materials help refine the senses--the channel through which learning occurs.  These experiences help your child to identify, classify and categorize sensorial impressions and develop a sense of order.  Children enjoy building a tower from the largest piece to the smallest, experiencing colors, smells, textures and sounds, and working with geometric shapes.  These activities lay the foundation for academic success.

Language

Language includes stories both read and told, self-expression, vocabulary building, sound and visual recognition of letters, reading and writing.  Your child will learn the sounds of the letters, begin to put these sounds together to form words, and then "explode" into reading.  The joy of accomplishment is readily apparent as the child further explores this new avenue of communication.

Math

After previous preparation with sorting, categorizing, sequencing and size discrimination, the Montessori math materials provide a concrete means for your child to learn and understand abstract mathematical concepts.  The math materials begin with learning quantity and symbol, then progress into place value and the four operations.

Geography & Science

Children participate in activities that allow them to explore the world by bringing it into the classroom.  Whether learning about other cultures or places, caring for plants and animals, studying nature, or enjoying an experiment, these activities increase your child's observation skills and stimulate curiosity.

Art, Music Expression, Gardening, Food Preparation, Outdoor Play & more

A full day at Child's View involves many of the activities listed here, and more.  These activities are integrated into the Montessori environment to enhance your child's creativity and self-expression, and aid in the full development of the person within.

All Day Montessori Options

In order to support working parents, Child's View provides an All Day Montessori Program.  Early Arrival is from 7:30-8:30 am, with all children arriving by 8:30.  Parents choose either the Half Day option until 1:00 pm, the Full Day option until 3:00 pm, the All Day Montessori option 1 until 4:30 pm, or the All Day Montessori option 2 until 6:00 pm.

Children staying All Day continue in the Montessori environment, rather than transitioning to a day care type area.  They can continue with their Montessori work, as well as other activities and interests which are integrated into the environment.  When Dr. Montessori began the first school in 1907, she called it "Casa dei Bambini" or Children's House.  In the Children's House, the children care for each other and their environment, not only learning, but living life together.
